Callisto is a level 470 bear that can be found south of the Demonic Ruins. He is killed for the valuable tyrannical ring and Callisto cub, though he can also drop the dragon 2h sword and dragon pickaxe.

Like all Wilderness bosses, Callisto resides in a multi-way area and in moderately high-level Wilderness. You may be attacked at any time during the kill. Do not bring any items that you are not willing to lose.

Suggested skills

  • Hitpoints 60 (90+ Recommended)
  • Strength 70 (90+ Recommended)
  • Attack 70 (90+ Recommended)
  • Defence 70 (90+ Recommended)
  • Prayer 44 (70+ Recommended)
  • Ranged 75 (90+ Recommended)

Setups

Considering Callisto's unusually high defences, weapons that can bypass them are commonly used, that includes Verac's set, ranging with Diamond bolts (e), specing/tagging Callisto with Magic longbow or hitting it with Chinchompas targeted on nearby spiders. Spells such as Vulnerability are sometimes also used to lower its defence. A charged Viggora's chainmace has a powerful bonus against wilderness monsters and can provide fastest melee kills, but it carries higher risk than other setups. Players (especially Ironman mode who do not wish to use ranged and do not have access to the above weapons or are unwilling to 4-item may attempt to use any weapon with high slash bonus such as Abyssal whip or Crystal halberd, but that leads to noticeably slower kills. The luring method would be the same as the other melee methods.

<tabber> Melee (Viggora's)= Viggora's chainmace becomes the best weapon to use against Callisto when using other equipment with high enough offensive bonuses. When using the chainmace, it's best to set its attack style to Stab| to inflict the most damage. However, this setup requires potentially risking certain untradeable items, such as rune or dragon defender. If you are in a certain death situation, drop the untradeable items (such as berserker ring (i), dragon defender) on the ground and pick them up within the next 180 seconds. (Logging pauses timer.) Players who are confident in not losing their untradeable items can optionally bring upgrades for extra damage output, such as infernal/fire cape, avernic defender, ferocious gloves and neitiznot faceguard.

When using this setup, it is recommended to only use the south-eastern safespot where the player is attacking the boss in a single-way combat. However, luring Callisto to the safespot requires the player to traverse through multi-way areas.

You could also consider bringing the book of the dead and placing fire runes, blood runes and cosmic runes in your rune pouch, and using Resurrect Greater Skeleton to increase your damage output.

How to get there

Callisto's location.png
  • With 90 Magic, players on the Ancient spellbook can use Annakarl Teleport, which will teleport them into the Demonic Ruins. Simply go south of your location after arriving. Be wary of PK'ers upon arrival. This is the fastest way to reach Callisto.
    • Alternatives to this also include the Annakarl teleport (tablet) tablet and a portal attuned to Annakarl. Be wary of PK'ers on arrival; if using the house portal, you should have a scrying pool to check the area first.
  • With 57 Woodcutting, players can make a Waka canoe and use it to go to the Wilderness. Go north-east of your location, but be wary of PKers and Vet'ion.
    • Having a royal seed pod makes this strategy more effective as this teleport takes the player close to a gnome glider which they can then take to Al Kharid (specified as Kar-Hewo on the destinations menu) and then walk to the canoe station past the Al Kharid toll gate. This means that the royal seed pod can be used as a lv 30 wilderness teleport, as a banking tool, and as a way to reach Callisto.
  • If you have neither of these requirements, simply use the games necklace to teleport to the Corporeal Beast's lair, exit the cave then run up north. Be wary of PKers, Vet'ion and the poison spiders if you do not plan to hug the lava river.
  • Players who have completed the Hard or Elite Wilderness Diary can use the Wilderness Sword 4| to teleport to the Fountain of Rune and run south-west to Callisto.

Attacks

A group of players fighting Callisto.
  • Melee: Callisto lunges his claw at his target for heavy melee damage.
  • Shock wave: Callisto unleashes a shock wave against his target. When this happens, a game message will appear saying that he has used the ability against you, just like Vet'ion's earthquake and Venenatis' web attack. This attack has no cooldown and can hit up to 60 in one attack. Callisto will use this ability much more often the further you are from him. The projectile of this attack is similar to Wind Wave.
  • Knockback: A small white projectile flies from the player straight to Callisto. When this happens, you will be knocked back several spaces from your current location, and a game message will appear stating "Callisto's roar knocks you backwards.", dealing 3 damage.
  • Heal: A blast will appear under Callisto. Even though the game states that Callisto will prepare to heal himself based on the damage dealt to him, he actually heals himself during this time for a small amount.

Strategy

For soloing, it is strongly recommended to use the southern singles safespot (see below) as otherwise Callisto will deal heavy damage consistently throughout the fight. When timed correctly, the player will take 0 damage from the lure, and the player can then attack Callisto safely in single-way combat area. However, luring Callisto to the safespot requires the player to traverse through multi-way areas.

If you plan to fight Callisto at his habitat in a larger team, it is advised to spread out so Callisto will constantly turn around, losing game ticks that could have been used to attack targets. In a duo, players will stand opposite of each other, and those in trios or quads can do the same in a duo for the vacant sides. Masses will not matter as Callisto is unlikely to turn as much to face his targets. Try to position him with your back next to a nearby tree; this way, whenever he performs his knockback attack, you will not be sent flying several spaces away from him, as he usually performs another knockback or shock wave if you are not within melee distance. Be careful as the area is very open and is a complete multi-way area, meaning a player can be instantly piled and get a quick death from PK'ers. Because of this, it is also recommended to bring much less risk when fighting there.

It is very beneficial to bring Blighted vengeance sack when fighting him head on. (In a team or solo) With Protect from Melee active, Callisto can only activate vengeance with his hard hitting special attack. This speeds up kills significantly as you rebound large hits back to him. Players may also summon a melee or range thrall from the Arceuus spellbook#Resurrection spells for extra damage without risking any items.

Players must use Melee or Ranged to kill Callisto, as he is completely immune to Magic damage. Viggora's chainmace is the best option for Melee, followed by using full Verac the Defiled's equipment. Dragon claws are the best special attack weapon to use for Melee, however bringing them likely means risking an expensive item. For Ranged, it is only recommended to use Craw's bow, as other weapons have considerably lower damage output. Another option is to lure Callisto in a safespot in the middle of the spider pit and chin poison spiders, however this is very expensive and risky.

The best option for tagging Callisto is to cast Vulnerability as it may land and lower his Defence, resulting in a slightly faster kill. Players are strongly recommended to bring a rune pouch (l) to save inventory space for more supplies. Alternatively, magic comp bow or magic longbow special attack can be used instead, as the weapons have long attack range and the special attack is guaranteed to hit.

As Callisto resides in deep Wilderness, it is much harder to escape from player killers than at Vet'ion or Venenatis. It is strongly recommended to bring black d'hide body, black d'hide chaps and Dinh's bulwark switches, as well as Saradomin brews along with super restores to have higher chances of escaping. Players may also want to bring an anti-venom+ (instead of an antidote++) in case a player killer is using a toxic staff of the dead.
