Mining is a skill that allows players to obtain ores and gems from rocks. The higher a player's Mining level is the more likely they are to successfully extract ore. With ores, a player can then either smelt bars and make equipment using the Smithing skill or sell them for profit.
Useful things and info
- The excavation silver relic offers a 5% chance to give double ores when mining, and creatures in the Living Rock Caverns will no longer be aggressive
- This is very useful once the player is mining concentrated coal and gold deposits
- All ores have a greatly increased re-spawn timer, no waiting 12 minutes for a runite ore to come back
- The golden mining set, obtained from Lava Flow Mine, will provide a 1% XP boost per piece, and 6% xp boost while the full set is worn
- The infernal pickaxe can be made by combining a smouldering stone with a dragon pickaxe
- The infernal pickaxe has a 1/3 chance of instantly destroying the ore you mined, and giving you the smithing XP for that ore (no coal required)
- The endless harvest gold relic can be used most effectively when mining concentrated coal and gold deposits, this will allow the player to mine without having to bank or drops ores
- A coal bag (purchased from the Dungeoneering rewards shop, or web store) can be useful when mining concentrated coal, if you're not dropping the ore
Equipment
The only item required to mine is a pickaxe. A certain attack level is required to wield one, but players are still able to use the pickaxe to mine without the Attack level requirement. Players should use the best pickaxe available for the fastest mining speed.
Using an infernal pickaxe will give a 1/3 chance for the ore to automatically combust, which will consume the ore. This reduces the number of ores that need to be dropped, and also grants some passive Smithing experience. Making an infernal pickaxe requires level 85 Smithing, and it can be charged with dragon pickaxes or smouldering stones.
The crystal pickaxe has the fastest mining speed, and it should be used if the player has enough crystal shards for it.

Prospector kit
Template:Main The Prospector kit obtained from Prospector Percy in the Motherlode Mine provides a total of 2.5% bonus Mining experience when worn. The outfit is not worth getting timewise if the player is going for 99 Mining using the fastest methods. However, it is a requirement for a master clue step and a hard task in the Falador Diary, so the player might want to get it anyway.
The full set costs 180 nuggets in total. Getting all the nuggets needed would take somewhere around 10 hours on average.

Red Sandstone
Red sandstone is the product of mining red sandstone rocks with Mining level 81. It can be made into robust glass by using the robust glass machine or the Superglass Make spell. Robust glass is then used to create 6 dose potion flasks. Players can mine a daily limit of sandstone depending on their donator rank. See Donator benefits page for details on daily limit. See the Red Sandstone article for more details.
Training Mining
Shooting Stars
- Shooting Stars are the best mining XP at any level, are AFK to mine, and provide the player with stardust (Donators get bonus dust)
- Shooting stars will not appear in any of the other methods below since they are mentioned here, but are limited time random events (there is no cap on stars you can mine per day, or stardust you can hand in)
- Stars require their size*10 mining level to mine, and as they are mined, they go down in tier
- If a size 9 star lands, it requires level 90 mining to mine it, once it has been mined through that layer, it will then require 80 mining, and so on
- Gold+ donators can easily get to the star with ;;star, and it will also display the time until the next one if there is no current star
- Pickaxe tier does not matter for the shooting star, which means the bronze pickaxe in your toolbelt is good enough
- Shooting Star loot table
- Star dust can be traded in at the end of the star for rewards, 200 dust is one loot roll
- You will always get: 150k, 150 astral runes, and 150 cosmic runes
- Star dust can be traded in at the end of the star for rewards, 200 dust is one loot roll
Levels 1 - 99
Levels 1-68
- From level 1 to 15 you can mine copper and tin. These can be mined in the Varrock Southeast Mine.
- Level 15 to 30/35/45/68 mine Iron. These can be mined in the Varrock Southeast Mine.
- When you want to stop mining Iron you have a variety of options:
- Coal at 30. This can be mined in the Falador Mine.
- Sandstone at 35. This can be mined at the Bandit camp Quarry.
- Granite at 45. This can be mined at the Bandit camp Quarry.
- When you want to stop mining Iron you have a variety of options:
Levels 68-77+
- The lava flow mine is a minigame where players are mining away the crust from lava pools
- This minigame is extremely AFK, good XP/hr and awards the player with the golden mining set
- The XP/hr here is slightly less than concentrated deposits, but is more AFK
Levels 77+
- The best location for mining Concentrated ore deposits is in the Platinum+ level of the Donator Zone. Alternatively, those without the rank can mine the deposits in the Living Rock Caverns
- The concentrated coal deposits require 77 mining, and the concentrated gold deposits require 80 mining
- Players should have the Excavation silver relic here to avoid getting hit by the NPCs
- If you want the max XP/hr you will need to empty your inventory with ;;e
- If you want to keep your ores, either use the endless harvest relic, which will automatically double the ores and bank them, or teleport home to bank, and teleport back with the Nexus
